On May 2nd, I interviewed Matt Silverman of Phoenix Editorial and Design for Inside the Black Box. This was an interesting look at his work on the Qualcomm/Brew Gaming promotional spot. In this video I walk through my setup for the shoot and discuss issues encountered.

Hey Cameron-
Thanks a lot for this. You did a great job with the shoot. Weird about the audio problems you had. At least you have sound on tape. If you need to back it up, you can always do so at your leisure.
Tough being a one man band, eh? Looking forward to seeing the show.

Hey Matthew,
Yeah, too bad I couldn’t find a better host!
Funny thing with the audio is that I recorded the BTS video using the exact same setup as I had for the shoot (well, I guess the microphone was different, which doesn’t explain the sped-up audio.) I’m digitizing the tapes now and hoping for good sound on at least one of the channels.
I did have my brother at the shoot, which was a tremendous help from a logistical standpoint and also just to have some moral support. But, alas, he wasn’t too sure what to be look for in the video scopes. It was great to have someone there to press “Record” and also restart DV Rack when it crashed. :-/ Weird.
Murphy’s Law.

Someone asked if the audio capture setting may have been set to 32K to cause the sped-up audio. There were no settings changes from my gear check the night before, to the shoot, to my recording of the voiceover a couple of days later. Everything was the same except for the microphone (the lav mics did not need phantom power) which doesn’t make any sense. But I’ll test that too. The only other thing that I thought of was that some of the older Digi drivers did not like it if the PowerBook was put to sleep. Perhaps something happened with sleep mode — I originally started out with the PowerBook on battery power.
Mysterious, and, mysteries and shooting do not well mix!
